BIOFORGE Division

Subsurface Biomedicince

BIOFORGE explores the hidden biochemical machinery of the underworld. We investigate how microbes, minerals, and molecular systems interact in caves and karst environments to generate metabolites, bioactive compounds, and geochemical transformations with biomedical potential.

From discovering novel microbial taxa to identifying natural products, signaling molecules, and environmental toxins, BIOFORGE drives the CHAOS Lab’s mission to uncover the molecular innovation happening beneath our feet.

This division is where new understanding is forged — in the dark, in the depths, and at the frontiers of biology and geology.

Core themes:

  • Subsurface microbial ecology

  • Bioactive compounds & natural product discovery

  • Microbe–mineral interactions

  • Cave biochemistry & environmental physiology

  • White-nose ecology & cave wildlife impacts

  • Multi-omics analysis of subsurface systems
